City of Northlake and Veterans Park District Combine Forces for New Ice Rink
The City of Northlake and the Veterans Park District have teamed up to bring an ice rink to area residents this winter. The rink will measure 32 feet x 60 feet and will be located on the site of the former Northlake Lutheran Church/City Centre at 112 N. Wolf Road. Ice will be maintained through the season (roughly Thanksgiving to St. Parick’s Day) with the use of a chilling equipment which will maintain a skateable surface in air temperatures of up to 50 degrees. The rink is portable and will be taken down for the warmer weather. The rink is also expandable should demand warrant it.
This follows the spirit of intergovernmental cooperation in Northlake which benefits all of our residents. Other examples are the expansion of Kahl Park, Posphalla Park and Friendship Park which all came about through intergovernmental agreements between the City, School and Park Districts. We are targeting Thanksgiving as the opening date for the new ice rink.
Police Pension Funding Level Continues to Rise
A while ago, the State of Illinois passed legislation requiring all Police and Fire Pensions to be funded at the 90% level by 2040. I am happy to report to you that the latest actuarial report on the Northlake Police Pension Fund shows that the funding level is at 84.72% as of December 31, 2025. The City is well on its way to achieving the 90% funding requirement much earlier than the 2040 deadline imposed by the State. This has been accomplished through financial discipline and good management practices, not through borrowing or other risky financial strategies.
New Businesses Come to Town
Take Five Oil Change has opened at 31 W. North Avenue next to Farmer’s Best Markets. Besides oil changes, Take 5 offers a range of drive through services such as air filters and wiper replacement and free tire pressure checks and other services. Dulce Frio opened at 46 E. North Avenue, next to the Wisdom II senior building. Besides offering handmade churros and coffee, they offer an extensive menu of desserts and beverages, featuring ice cream, lattes, frappes, cold brew and many other tempting treats. Mary’s Salon has found a permanent home at 220 E. North Avenue. Originally located at 107 N. Wolf Road, the Salon moved due to the construction of a storm water management area. Temporarily locating to 404 E. North Avenue, they found a new home at 220 E. North Avenue last year when they purchased and remodeled the building. They offer haircuts, fades, styling, eyebrow waxing, chemicals and ear piercing. Call for an appointment.
Crave Cookies recently opened at 75 W. North Avenue. They sell freshly baked cookies in dozens of varieties. They also have a variety of sodas loaded with lots of flavor.
